We created this lil' voice actor habits blueprint based on the principles from Atomic Habits by James Clear.
We read the book and thought it would be so helpful—in life AND in our voiceover work! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
In fact, we liked it so much that we linked it here on our Amazon storefront AND wrote a whole blog post about it AND created a blueprint for voice actors based on what we learned! Enjoy!
This book is helpful for everyone looking to make new habits, but especially useful for creatives—actors, writers, you all—our lovely voiceover artists—because it focuses on systems over willpower. Creativity isn’t just about inspiration; it’s about consistently showing up and doing the work, even when you don’t feel like it.
Why It Resonates for Creative Professionals
1. Builds Consistency in Practice
Creative growth often happens in small, repeated actions—warm-ups, auditions, daily writing, and recording practice. Atomic Habits teaches how to make these habits automatic, so you’re less reliant on bursts of motivation.
2. Reduces Resistance
Clear’s “make it easy” approach helps creatives remove friction around starting work. That could mean keeping your mic always set up, having your audition scripts pre-printed, or blocking time on your calendar for character voice creation or "business strategy" brainstorming.
3. Encourages Identity-Based Habits
The book focuses on shifting your identity: instead of saying “I want to record more auditions,” you think “I’m a voice actor who records daily.” This mindset builds confidence and creative ownership.
4. Uses Small Wins to Build Momentum
Clear emphasizes the compound effect of small improvements—getting 1% better every day. For creatives, that could mean refining vocal technique, expanding your character range, or learning new storytelling styles without burning out.
5. Breaks Down the “All or Nothing” Trap
Many creatives get stuck in perfectionism or big, overwhelming goals. Atomic Habits reframes success as steady, manageable steps, so you stay in motion instead of waiting for the “perfect” moment to create.
The Voice Actor Habits Blueprint
1. Identity-Based Habits → “I am a voice actor who shows up daily.”
Instead of vague goals (“I want to book more work”), anchor habits to your identity. For Example:
Identity: I’m a professional voice actor.
Habit: I record at least one read every day, no matter if it is for an audition, a class, or just practice.
2. Make It Obvious → Cue your creativity
Set visual and environmental reminders so you can’t ignore your practice. A few ideas to get you started:
Keep your mic and headphones set up at all times.
Place a sticky note with “Record 10 minutes” on your computer.
Use a recurring calendar reminder for script practice.
3. Make It Attractive → Pair it with something you enjoy
Turn practice into something you look forward to. Here are some Ideas:
Practice scripts from your favorite animated shows or commercial brands.
Reward yourself with a treat or a short walk after you record.
Join an accountability group with other voiceover actors.
4. Make It Easy → Lower the friction
The easier the habit is to start, the more likely you’ll stick with it. Ideas:
Keep a folder of “ready-to-go” scripts for workshops on your desktop.
Have presets in your DAW so you can record instantly.
Use short, 5–10 minute warm-ups instead of waiting for a “free hour.”
5. Make It Satisfying → Track and celebrate progress
Immediate feedback helps cement habits. Here's a few ideas:
Keep a daily journal of auditions, workshops, classes, practice recordings, and note what felt strong.
Connect with a fellow actor or voiceover peer weekly for action check-ins.
Mark off a monthly progress tracker—visually seeing your daily commitment to your voiceover career is motivating.
Sample Daily Habit Stack for Voice Actors
(Habit stacking = pairing a new habit with an existing one)
After I make my morning coffee (or tea!), I’ll do a 5-minute vocal warm-up.
After I check my email, I’ll record one practice read.
After I finish my day’s last task, I’ll watch or listen to one commercial with voiceover, watch one animated series episode, watch a character cut-away scene in a video game playthrough video, or listen to an audiobook, etc.
A lil' VO Workshop Tip:
Small wins compound. Recording one script a day for 6 months = 180 recordings to learn from, refine, and share.
